Zhu Zhaorui: Travel around the world for $3,000.
Zhu Zhaorui, a 32-year-old boy from Northeast China, traveled to 28 countries and regions on four continents for 77 days, including transportation and accommodation, and spent only 3,000 dollars, fulfilling the "global dream" that most people thought was out of reach, creating the myth of comfortable travel in the global economy.
Born in 1970, Zhu Zhaorui is a native of Shenyang. In 1992, he completed his college studies by selling newspapers. In 1999, he went to study in the UK and got an MBA.
When studying in England, Zhu Zhaorui's roommate was an English boy studying geography. One night, while drinking and chatting in a bar, his roommate pointed to the newspaper and said ostentatiously, "Look, we British people have traveled around the world again," with a smug look. Zhu Zhaorui was unconvinced and thought he could do it, so he made a bet with his roommate.
Gambling, but traveling around the world can't be started with a backpack. Which route to take, how much to invest, and what to focus on must be planned in detail. Fortunately, Zhu Zhaorui studied marketing in MBA, and careful calculation is his strong point. He spent half a year collecting all kinds of travel information and cultural and geographical information of various countries, and determined that "traveling around the world for $3,000" was not a dream plan, although the normal cost was $200,000.
On May 15th, 2002, Zhu Zhaorui, who successfully completed his MBA, set out from London, England and started his "global travel". In the next 84 days, from the vast Atlantic Ocean to the vast Pacific Ocean, from Christchurch in New Zealand to Hawaiian beaches in the United States, from smoke-filled Jerusalem to quiet and peaceful Swiss towns, this ordinary China youth left his footprints. The first stop is Athens, the capital of Greece, then from Greece to Italy, via Switzerland to France, Spain, Portugal, and finally fly back to London. Then fly from London to Hong Kong SAR and from Hong Kong to Beijing. After a short rest in China, he flew to Seoul, to Sydney, the capital of Australia, and then to Auckland. Then, he flew to Los Angeles, Mexico, Vancouver, Seattle and new york. Finally fly back to London from new york.
What propped up his whole journey was a very cheap round-the-world ticket he bought. With a ticket of $1,000, you can take any one of the eight major airlines for six times. Zhu Zhaorui solved the problem of long-distance air tickets. Short and medium-distance journeys use trains, tourist buses, and multi-person shared cars. And booking a plane ticket in advance has an incredibly low discount. The cheapest plane ticket, he actually only spent 0.01 euros! Equivalent to RMB eight cents. After spending more than 1000 dollars on air tickets, he spent one third of his travel expenses to solve the accommodation problem. The last $1,000, Zhu Zhaorui spent on playing and buying souvenirs.
Traveling around is not a masochistic trip. "Traveling around the world for $3,000 is not a masochistic trip to eat dry food and sleep on the road as everyone imagines. Every time I go to a country, I will go to some special places to eat." In Las Vegas, he stayed in a five-star hotel, ate a seafood buffet and played in the Colorado Grand Canyon, which cost less than 100 dollars, because the hotel he stayed in was reserved and cost less than 10 dollars.
Zhu Zhaorui said that five philosophies supported his global travel: travel is a way of life; Travel is an investment, such as buying stocks for yourself. The experience and growth during the journey will add points to the future. Travel is an adventure rather than an adventure; Travel is not asceticism, eat well, play well and have fun, and come all the way; Traveling, not traveling, can accumulate more life experiences.
